The Bears on Sunday announced the hiring of veteran NFL assistant Juan Castillo as their offensive line coach.
Castillo has spent 24 seasons coaching in the NFL with the Eagles (1995-2012), Ravens (2013-16) and Bills (2017-18). He worked with Bears coach Matt Nagy from 2008-12 on Andy Reid’s staff in Philadelphia.
Castillo most recently served as offensive line coach and run game coordinator with the Bills. In his two seasons, Buffalo ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing in 2017 (126.1 yards per game) and fifth in 2018 (124.0).
Prior to that, Castillo spent four seasons with the Ravens, serving as run game coordinator in 2013 and offensive line coach from 2014-16. Under his tutelage, Baltimore allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL in 2014-15 with 43 and set a team record with 4,271 passing yards and compiled the second most total yards (5,749) in 2015. In addition, guard Marshall Yanda was voted to the Pro Bowl in all four of Castillo’s seasons with the Ravens.
In 2014, running back Justin Forsett produced a career-high 1,266 rushing yards and led the league with a team-record 17 rushes of 20-plus yards, earning his first Pro Bowl invitation. In 2013, Castillo worked with a line that helped Joe Flacco set career highs in attempts (614), completions (362) and passing yards (3,912). Castillo originally joined Baltimore as a consultant prior to Super Bowl XLVII in January 2013.
With Castillo as Eagles offensive line coach from 1998-2010, Philadelphia made nine playoff appearances and rushed for an average of 1,854 yards and 12 touchdowns per season. In 2010, the Eagles ranked fifth in the NFL with 145.2 yards per game on the ground.
During his 13 seasons as Philadelphia’s offensive line coach, five different players earned nine Pro Bowl honors, including three-time selection tackle Tra Thomas (2001-02, 2004), guard Shawn Andrews (2006-07) and tackle Jason Peters (2009-10). Castillo finished his Eagles tenure as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2011-12. Under his tutelage, Philadelphia’s defense led the NFL with 50 sacks in 2011.
Castillo earned a bachelor’s degree in health/kinesiology in 1986 and a master’s in education administration in 1990 from Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville), where he was a three-year letterman (1978-80) at linebacker for the Javelinas. Following college, Castillo spent two seasons (1984-85) with the USFL’s San Antonio Gunslingers as a linebacker before moving to the coaching ranks.
