CHARLOTTE -- Quarterback Cam Newton worked off on the side during Tuesday's practice, another step in his rehabilitation process as he works his injured foot back to 100 percent.

Newton was working alongside rookie edge rushers Brian Burns (hand) and Christian Miller (ankle). After taking part in team stretch, he performed a series of drills involving footwork and stationary throwing under the watchful eye of head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion.

"He's been doing all the drills that RV has set up for him," head coach Ron Rivera said. "You guys saw probably the most extensive drills we've had with him here. For the most part, that's what he's working on."

Newton has not played since the Week 2 loss against Tampa Bay. Rivera stated on Monday that Kyle Allen will start at quarterback for the fifth consecutive game.
