Former Bears fullback/running back Fred Morrison passed away last Sunday reportedly due to complications from a broken hip. He was 94.
Morrison was selected by the Bears with the 10th pick in the first round of the 1950 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He spent four seasons with the Bears, rushing for 1,022 yards and six touchdowns on 285 carries and catching 40 passes for 426 yards and one TD. The 6-2, 215-pounder led the Bears in rushing with 367 yards in 1952 and 307 yards in 1953.
Morrison spent his final three NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns from 1954-56. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1955 when he rushed for a career high 824 yards on 156 carries.
At Ohio State, Morrison was chosen MVP of the 1950 Rose Bowl after rushing for 119 yards in a win over California.
Morrison remained in pro football after his playing days, serving as chief operating officer and general manager of the USFL's Los Angeles Express and general manager of the WFL's Southern California Sun.
An advocate for retired NFL players, Morrison founded the NFL Legends Invitational, a charitable golf tournament that's held every November in Pebble Beach, Calif.
