The TD came after the Bears had scored just one touchdown on their previous 23 possessions dating back to their Week 10 win over the Lions.
After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Bears reached the Giants’ 6 before settling for Pineiro’s 24-yard field goal that increased their lead to 13-7 midway through the third quarter.
On the next play from scrimmage, Khalil Mack produced a strip sack of Daniel Jones and Nick Williams recovered the fumble at the Giants’ 3. On third-and-goal, Trubisky’s 2-yard touchdown dash on a designed run made it 19-7.
Trubisky’s successful two-point conversion pass to Taylor Gabriel was nullified by a pass interference penalty on Robinson. After an illegal substitution foul, Pineiro missed a 48-yard extra-point attempt
While the offense awoke in the second half, the Bears defense was stout throughout most of the game, holding the Giants to seven points until late in the second half.
New York closed the gap to 19-14 on Jones’ 23-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on fourth-and-18 with 4:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Giants got the ball back after David Montgomery was dropped for a one-yard loss on third-and-one from the Bears’ 34. But the Chicago defense held.
The Bears trailed Sunday’s game 7-3 at halftime.
The Giants took a 7-0 lead on Jones’ 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kaden Smith with 7:38 left in the second quarter.
New York had a chance to widen the margin, but Aldrick Rosas—who played in the Pro Bowl last season—missed field-goal attempts of 42 yards wide left and 43 yards wide right on the Giants’ last two possessions of the half.
The second miss came after Leonard Floyd and Eddie Jackson teamed up to drop Saquon Barkley for a four-yard loss on third-and-one.
The Bears were plagued by mistakes in the first half, mostly on offense. Trubisky threw a red-zone interception in the end zone, wide open tight end Ben Braunecker dropped a perfect pass that likely would have resulted in a 29-yard TD, and an illegal hands-to-the-face penalty on center Cody Whitehair nullified Trubisky’s 60-yard completion to Robinson.
The Bears also made mistakes on defense and special teams. Sherrick McManis dropped a sure interception, Pineiro booted the game-opening kickoff out of bounds and Pat O'Donnell shanked a 13-yard punt.
The Giants entered Sunday’s game ranked 30th in the NFL in points allowed per game at 28.9 and had permitted nine of 10 opponents this season to score at least 27 points against them.
