Larry Fitzgerald was ready to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, in no small part because the NFL had managed to maneuver to this part of the season while a pandemic was going on.
"All of us are very thankful to be able to do what we do," Fitzgerald said Wednesday after practice. "If you would've told me in June that we would be here in Week 11 or 12 of the season and we are still rolling as a league. I would've told you it was probably 50-50 with everything that's going on (with COVID)."
Then came the NFL Network report Thanksgiving morning that Fitzgerald, the Cardinals' face of the franchise, had tested positive for COVID-19.
Fitzgerald was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list by the Cardinals Thursday afternoon. He will miss Sunday's game in New England. Wide receiver Trent Sherfield is also going on the COVID list.
Fellow wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday and was listed as having an illness on Wednesday's injury report, but on Thursday's estimated injury report (the Cardinals did not practice), Hopkins was listed as full.
Fitzgerald, in his 17th season, has not missed a game since 2014. He is coming off his best game of the season, with eight catches for 68 yards in Seattle. If he does not play it will snap a string of 94 consecutive starts, although his streak of 253 straight games with a reception will not be lost.
Safety Deionte Thompson had already been put on the COVID list earlier this week. The list is for players who have either tested positive or were in close contact with someone who has tested positive.
"We're clearly not out of the water with the way it's going but to be able to come here and do the work that we're doing and be around the men we're around and have family and friends be healthy (is good)," Fitzgerald said Wednesday. "We know a lot of Americans have suffered over these last few months and our thoughts and prayers are with them as a team and an organization and I just hope everyone has a wonderful holiday."
THANKSGIVING INJURY REPORT
For the Cardinals on their estimated injury report for Thursday, tight end Darrell Daniels (ankle), defensive lineman Josh Mauro (hamstring) and safety Jalen Thompson (ankle) were DNP. Safety Charles Washington (groin), guard Justin Murray (hand) and quarterback Kyler Murray (shoulder) were listed as limited.
