The Lead

The Broncos are on the rise.

In Dan Hanzus' new NFL.com power rankings assessing the landscape of the NFL after free agency, the Broncos have moved up to No. 24 after previously being ranked No. 27.

In his eyes, Denver resolved lingering concerns about the team's holes in their secondary with new additions and their recent moves to retain perhaps the league's top safety duo in Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson.

"The Broncos appear to have addressed their most glaring need on defense with two smart signings in the secondary," Hanzus wrote. "Denver scooped up Ronald Darby in the first week of free agency, then pounced on Kyle Fuller when the cap-strapped Bears were forced to part ways with the veteran. Fuller played for Vic Fangio in Chicago and serves as a perfect complement to Darby.

"With Justin Simmons also locked in with a new extension and Kareem Jackson coming back, the Denver secondary could go from liability to strength."

Hanzus isn't the only NFL.com writer who's big on the Broncos' moves. So is Gregg Rosenthal, who put all of their defensive moves in his article listing the best contracts given out in free agency.

Rosenthal was a fan of the team's moves to sign Darby and Fuller, and to re-sign Simmons, but his favorite of the bunch may have been the Broncos' first, the re-signing of Shelby Harris.

"I love that the Broncos' rewarded Shelby Harris, who has been a gamewrecker the last few years," Rosenthal wrote. "He has made as big an impact as some of the higher-paid free agents out there."
