Three days after their deflating 17-16 home loss to the Chargers, the Bears return to the practice field Wednesday to continue preparing for Sunday’s game against the Eagles in Philadelphia.
After recording three straight wins, the Bears (3-4) have lost three in a row for the first time in Matt Nagy’s two seasons as coach. The defending NFC North champions are in last place in the division behind the Packers (7-1), Vikings (6-2) and Lions (3-3-1).
In last Sunday’s loss to the Chargers, the Bears compiled season highs with 388 yards and 26 first downs and possessed the ball for 38:00. But they scored just one touchdown on five red-zone possessions and committed two turnovers in the fourth quarter. They still had a chance to win, but Eddy Piñeiro missed a 41-yard field-goal wide left as time expired.
The Eagles (4-4) are in second place in the NFC East behind the Cowboys (4-3). They return home to Lincoln Financial Field after three consecutive road games. Philadelphia lost 38-20 in Minnesota and 37-10 in Dallas before winning 31-13 in Buffalo last Sunday.
The Eagles are led by quarterback Carson Wentz, who has completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 1,821 yards with 14 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 94.0 passer rating. Former Bears running back Jordan Howard has rushed for 443 yards and five touchdowns on 100 carries.
Series history
The Bears lead the all-time series 30-15-1 but have lost four straight. The Bears lost the last meeting 16-15 in a wild-card playoff game on Jan. 6, 2019 at Soldier Field. The Bears’ first playoff appearance in eight seasons ended in heartbreaking fashion as Cody Parkey’s 43-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright and then the crossbar with :05 left in the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored the winning points on Nick Foles’ 2-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on fourth-and-goal with :56 remaining in the game.
Numbers game
The Bears enter Week 9 ranked 29th on offense in the NFL (26th rushing and 29th passing) and 7th on defense (6th against the run and 10th versus the pass). The Eagles rank 21st on offense (13th rushing and 21st passing) and 14th on defense (8th against the run and 21st versus the pass).
Talk show
Nagy will address the media Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky will speak Wednesday, while offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano and special-teams coordinator Chris Tabor will conduct press conferences Thursday.
