CHARLOTTE – Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was a limited participant in practice for a second straight day, and his status for Sunday's game with the Lions is still up in the air.
"He's throwing all the routes and stuff, but not with anyone around him. We don't want him to get stepped on or hurt," head coach Matt Rhule said after Thursday's practice. "He's moving around well in terms of jogging, but he hasn't really opened up yet.
"He's preparing as if he's going to play. If we get to Sunday and he feels like he can play, or if Saturday he feels like, 'Hey, I can't definitely do this,' then we're going to play him. ... I'm not going to put him out there if he's going to hurt himself, but if he can play, he's going to play. So if he gets there Sunday and he's ready to go, then we're going to play with him."
With the Panthers willing to go as long as Sunday to make the call, that means Bridgewater's potential replacement wouldn't be named until this weekend. If Bridgewater can't play, it'll be either P.J. Walker making his first career NFL start or Will Grier making his third.
"We'll go all the way through the week, and if Teddy doesn't go, then we would pick the guy we feel gives us the best chance to win this week," Rhule said.
Four Panthers did not practice Thursday: running back Christian McCaffrey (shoulder), guard John Miller (knee/ankle), left tackle Russell Okung (calf) and cornerback Donte Jackson (toe). Rhule on Wednesday said McCaffrey, Okung and Jackson were all unlikely to face the Lions, and Miller looks doubtful as well after missing his second straight practice.
